Ajay's paintings are fascinating. They show an enormous mastery of colour and a vivid imagination, plus an intense fascination with the natural world. His love of animals is evident, but more particularly his interaction with the larger species: the elephant above all, symbol of wisdom, of eternity, of preservation, and the hippopotamus as well. The elephant is royalty, but also family - it leads and protects the herd, the young; the innocence of the butterfly; the close family unit symbolized by the cylinder. There are many versions of the elephant in Ajay's paintings, from the dominant large solo bull to the group of young, but all portrayed with respect and affection, colourful, wise and in control, balanced on a bottle or a stool, alone or in a group, but always outstanding.
